Advances in expressive animation in the interactive performance of a butoh dance

Abstrakt
In our project we are able to track and analyze the abstract-expressive, "emotional" contents of a Butoh dance performance. From the data delivered by a wearable body sensor network we extract semantic information in order to control a variety of visual effects and thus gain an explicit command over expressivity. On the basis of numerous performances we have evaluated and refined the artistic perspective of visual feedback and narrative structures in interactive improvisation. The best results were achieved with an artistic concept based on a notion of force field that is commonly sensed by a Butoh dancer. We have put a particular emphasis on exploring the choreographic challenge caused by the confrontation of intuitive improvisation with a rather rigidly structured visual biofeedback.
