‘… as an anthropologist concerned primarily with our understanding of ourselves as human beings I believe that, looking back, our descendants will regard as one of the great accomplishments of our age the discovery of the nature of childhood and our attempt to put this new knowledge to work in the upbringing of our children’ (Mead, 1972).
