However paradoxical it may appear, to determine the nature and limits of philosophical speculation is to speculate philosophically. This paradox suggests that philosophy itself depends upon insights and commitments which may be, if not strictly non-philosophical, prephilosophical. For this reason a critical appraisal of a philosophical method presents a delicate and difficult task involving issues of decisive import far beyond the limits of mere procedural techniques.¹
